my vision

For me, photographic image-making is a conscious assembly of very fine details into a complete aesthetic statement. Influenced, no doubt, by the 1970s era modern social documentary photographers, I remain intrigued by the edgier aspects of the people and places around me.

I work primarily in black & white, most often in thematic series which allows me to really explore a motif, although I usually work on several themes concurrently. The energy that develops between my model and myself have much more bearing on the final print than any technical tricks might.

In addition to commissioned work, my current projects include Beard Proud Men from all walks of life in the North Carolina mountains around my studio; and Body Art Orchestra which explores tattooed women with musical instruments. I am always looking for creative, self confident, artistic models to collaborate with on new projects.

I’d like to express thanks to photographic legend Greg Gorman (gormanphotography.com) for his teaching and mentoring me. His iconic work has set the bar high for black & white portraiture.
